Amplifying Voices from Ethnic Minority Communities: Hybrid/Online Wellbeing Activities for Diverse Communities
Project Summary
Families of diverse ethnicities can experience disadvantages in dementia care due to social stigma and lack of culturally appropriate services. There is substantial evidence that creative activities can help with family care and maintaining sense of identity for people with dementia. However, many resources are designed primarily for people with memories of growing up in England (e.g. listening to British pop music).
Whilst face-to-face creative activities are popular, online content has the potential benefit of catering to every taste, faith, and cultural background. This project is about enabling diverse ethnic minority communities and carer groups to access and share suitable resources; and support those living with advanced dementia to experience better quality of life at home. We have been working with 7 diverse ethnic communities in Nottingham and Derbyshire. LinksCVS coordinate carers groups, and we will work with these to test online activity sessions. With community leaders we will co-design an approach for members to learn in group sessions, then take home to provide activities for family members with dementia at home. We will explore the potential to develop our own content to share with online platforms, for example our members leading a music and dance session.
The idea was initiated by a project funded by NIHR Applied Research Collaboration East Midlands together with Derbyshire Healthcare Trust.
