The Rainbow Care Group in Bromley Co-creation Event

On the 4th of March 2025, the EMPOWER Dementia Network+ collaborated with the Rainbow Care Group in Bromley for a co-creation event during their open day. Together, through creative methods we explored ideas for achieving excellent and inclusive dementia care, bringing together people living with dementia, their family members, carers, and community members and groups from across Bromley.

On the 4th of March 2025, the EMPOWER Dementia Network+ collaborated with the Rainbow Care Group in Bromley for a co-creation event during their open day. The event was a vibrant gathering of people living with dementia, their families, and community members.

The day commenced with a Puja ceremony, described as a symbol of hope by Councillor Dr David Jefferys, who attended as the chief guest. Following this, the Rainbow Care founder and representatives from local dementia groups delivered inspiring talks. Andy Bradshaw, our Network Manager, introduced the EMPOWER Network and outlined its aims and objectives. The opening celebrations included a cake-cutting ceremony, after which attendees engaged in a contest where winners were announced and received prizes. Designed thoughtfully for people living with dementia, the event also featured dementia-friendly activities. The day concluded with an open tour and networking opportunities to foster meaningful community connections.

Adapting to the needs of attendees, the co-creation activities centred on two key tools: the metaphorical Vision Tree and Toolshed. The Vision Tree served as a creative framework for discussing priorities in achieving excellent and inclusive dementia care. The Toolshed complemented this by encouraging conversations about the resources required to bring this vision to life.

Attendees shared a range of insights for the Vision Tree, such as the importance of adapting to the individual’s world, providing stimulating activities, and promoting person-centred care that respects independence. They also emphasised the need for greater awareness, reducing stigma, and ensuring support following a diagnosis. For the Tool Shed, ideas included the importance of communication, awareness campaigns, and creating joyful activities like singing and dancing to keep people engaged with the world.

These contributions form the foundation of the EMPOWER Dementia Network+ Vision. As similar workshops take place across the UK, we will collate and analyse these creative outputs to develop a shared vision which will guide the network’s future by shaping funding criteria for small research projects, informing priorities, and maximising our impact.

We extend our gratitude to all attendees of the Rainbow Care Group open day for their thoughtful contributions and kindness.
