Empowering a meaningful life
for all with Dementia

About Us

The EMPOWER Dementia Network+ is a dedicated network of people who want to work together to make things fair and equal for everyone with dementia. We are co-producing a future where people can do things that they enjoy and that matter to them, and where they can spend time with the people they care about.

To do this we are tackling inequalities in dementia care, so that everyone – no matter of ethnicity, postcode or stage of condition – can live a meaningful life. By working in partnership with lived-experts, community partners, practitioners, researchers and policy makers we are striving to tackle inequalities in dementia care so that everyone can live a meaningful life.

Our Mission

We believe it is possible to live a meaningful life with dementia, but that there are unfair and avoidable inequalities in access to dementia care. Our network has come together to:

Work together to find creative ways to make a positive difference in dementia care.

Raise the voices of people from marginalised, vulnerable and underserved groups.

Find new ways to do research that means more people with dementia can take part.

Our Vision

Our vision has been co-created through working with people with dementia, families and carers, community partners, practitioners, and researchers. It brings together their perspectives to reflect what matters most to people affected by dementia and those who support them.

It outlines why we exist as a Network, the values that guide how we work, and what excellent and inclusive dementia care should look like in practice. We use this vision as a shared reference point for our work. It helps guide decisions, shape our Network priorities, and support how we work with people affected by dementia.

Delivering the NHS 10-Year Plan: Reducing Inequalities in Dementia Care for People Needing Greater Support

Dementia is a leading cause of death in the UK. However, significant inequalities persist in care and support. The NHS 10-Year Plan offers a key opportunity to address these gaps. The EMPOWER Dementia Network+, co-led by King’s College London and the University of West London, aims to tackle the worst inequalities through policy engagement. We held a Policy Lab bringing together people living with dementia, carers, community partners, clinicians, researchers, and policymakers to develop shared ‘Calls for Action’ aligned with the Plan’s three shifts.

For full details and evidence underpinning the calls for action, see the Policy Brief.

Empower

by Ronald Amanze
This poem captures the challenges and hopes of living with dementia.

How you define me and refer to me
is so disheartening.

As every thing you say devalues and disempowers me
when I need empowerment
if only to breathe,
Feels I’m stuck, in an unhealthy lifestyle.
In need of meaningful change.
In need of an alternative outcome.
To be empowered and not redefined.
If only to breathe.
And when you make decisions about my life
Did you ever consider I need a choice
Anyway, I’m sitting here reading your case notes
where every thing you say diminishes and devalues me
hence curious
to simulate your imagination
I wounder did you ever consider
The awesome ability and personality of a Brain,
when empowered with option and equality.
If only to breathe.
